What a kick from Kylie
Kylie Minogue is one of the few international stars whose Thai fan base grows every time they visit. There was a phenomenal turnout for her third appearance in this country on Saturday and the fans' devotion was loud and unequivocal.It's been 20 years since the pop singer performed here for the first time, appearing with Jason Donovan, with whom she collaborated on the timeless hit "Especially for You".
Donovan has long since vanished from the radar screen, but Minogue continues to soar as a pop-dance diva, Madonna's archrival and one of the most adored gay icons.
The 2008 Bangkok show earned her legions more fans, mostly with her pop groove, but Saturday's show added many more gay and younger fans who loved shaking their limbs to her more recent clubfriendly hits.
Impact Arena - hosting the kickoff show for the Asian tour - almost felt like a fancy gay party. A lot of folks wore costumes, mostly inspired by the tour's Aphrodite theme. There were feathers, gladiator sandals, Roman togas everywhere, as well as full drag gear.
"I know this isn't really Greek mythology," said a fan in fishnet stockings and a red boa, "but I just wanted to dress up anyway because I love her so much, and I want to show her how much she's loved by the fans here."
Minogue returned the favour with a string of crowdpleasing outfits for her ultra-extravagant $25million Aphrodite Tour. Bangkok has never seen such a complex production.
The show kicked off with sea foam and bubbles, out of which arose Kylie, the goddess of love newly born yet fully developed.
She sang the slow-tempo "Aphrodite", "The One", "Illusion" and "I Believe in You" to give the audience time to get used to the surreal extravagance. It was like seeing Cirque du Soleil, maybe at some "Ancient Athens casino" in Las Vegas.
Then it was time to pick up the pace with "Spinning Around", "Get Outta My Way" and "What Do I Have to Do?"
The goddess of love soon shed her toga and feathered earpiece and switched to a 1930s cabaret outfit to belt out a swing version of the technopop "Slow".
More dancing and cheering from the fans followed as the cast onstage raced through "Can't Get You Out of My Head", "In My Arms", "Love at First Sight" and "Can't Beat the Feeling".
A solemn, haunting rendition of "If You Don't Love Me" marked the end of the segment and Minogue swept back into goddess mode for "Better the Devil You Know" and "Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love").
