Nichols on Fantasy NHL: Hockey Hearsay
The Ottawa Sun relays that it was worth the wait for Paul MacLean.
The longtime NHL assistant, who has been behind the Detroit Red Wings bench with Mike Babcock since 2005-06, was introduced as the Senators ninth head coach during a news conference Tuesday at Scotiabank Place.
"It's a very exciting day for myself and my family," said MacLean, who played junior in Hull. "I'm really looking forward to this.
"The NHL is a fast and a physical league. We're going to be quick team. We're going to use the whole league."
Trying to get a coach in place that can lead the Senators back to respectability after coach Cory Clouston’s reign came to an end in April, GM Bryan Murray introduced the 53-year-old MacLean to the media.
After speaking to six candidates, Murray decided MacLean was the right man for the job. The two have a long history together. MacLean was also an assistant on Babcock’s staff while Murray was GM in Anaheim in 2003.
"After a poor season the need for change was obvious," said Murray. "I felt Paul fit the profile. He's been a player, a head coach and an assistant coach. He's been a winner everywhere he has been."
MacLean said he is excited by the opportunity. He has a big job trying to get the club back to the playoffs while getting top centre Jason Spezza and defenceman Erik Karlsson to be consistent contributors.
The Senators have missed the playoffs in two of the last three years. This is the fourth coach Murray has hired during his four-year tenure as GM. The others were John Paddock, Craig Hartsburg and Clouston.
MacLean said he will communicate with the players.
"It's not me against them. It's us - the Ottawa Senators - against the whole league," said MacLean.
The Sun also reports that captain Daniel Alfredsson was on hand at the news conference along with winger Nick Foligno . Alfredsson said his back surgery Friday went well and he is moving around fine. He was released from hospital the same day.
"We've done it before — that's the only thing," Henrik Sedin told The Vancouver Province of the pending Game 7 at Rogers Arena. "We've got a good team in here with a lot of guys who have battled hard and we showed up all season. And we'll show up in the final game. We're confident on home ice and it's going to be a great game.
"If somebody had told me we'd have a Game 7 for the season at home, I would have taken it any day. That's where we are right now. We've got one game left.

What should have been nipped in the bud through silence had escalated in the full-scale controversy known as Louie-Gate. It certainly looked as if Luongo's words concerning Thomas motivated the Bruins, who pumped three goals past him in the first 8:35

True story: in third grade, I wrote a story about the Bud Ice penguin for parents day, where a lot of parents came and listened to the kids read their stories, poems, etc that we had worked on in class. Naturally, I ended it with “drink Bud Ice. But uhhh, beware of the penguin.” As far as I remember I pretty much got away with unknowingly advocating beer drinking to a crowd of people at the age of 7.
Sadly, now that I’m legal, Bud Ice is nowhere to be found. Heartbreaking. Does it still exist?
Like or Dislike:
This commercial is so creepy, I love it. A friend of mine once told me that he fell asleep on the couch while watching television, and this commercial came on. It got to the part where it said, “This is the police! Those calls are coming from inside the house! Repeat! Those calls are coming from inside the house!” And he woke up screaming.
So, of course, I tracked down a wav file of the commercial and emailed it to him. He sent me back a reply, telling me I was “pure evil.
