Pop N' Doc's In Decatur Shuts Down Due To Flood

Floodwaters have already shutdown a popular landmark for boaters and locals in Decatur, NE.

Fifteen thousand dollars. That's how much money the owners of the Decatur marina and Pop N' Doc's restaurant could've made today. But they didn't because flood waters have basically turned their restaurant into an island.

On a typical Saturday during the Summer, Pop N' Doc's at the Decatur Marina would be bustling with folks looking to have a good time. But flood waters have spoiled the fun.

"We're talking you know 130, 120 people here eating, drinking, listening to music and that's our business and we don't have that today," said Mark Kwikkel, one of the owners of the Decatur Marina.

The Kwikkel brothers had to shut down the marina this week after water started getting dangerously close to the road and their restaurant. They've already lost about $15,000 just by being closed on Saturday and the loss will only add up.

"We're seasonal. We make our break and butter from may until the end of September and we're not going to be able to do that," said Kwikkel.

They also own a trailer home at the marina just by the river. And each day they've seen flood waters get closer and closer to what they've worked so hard to have and what they'll fight for until the end.

"We're not going away. I mean, we'll battle back that's just the way we are in the Midwest you just don't give up," said Kwikkel.

The brothers say they'll be living in the second floor of their restaurant so they can monitor flood waters from there and just hope for the best.

Decatur Island | Anacortes Real Estate

Ocated just 5 nautical miles west of Anacortes is another world…

Peaceful and quiet with winding gravel lanes, open meadows, treed hillsides and beaches; Decatur Island is home to about 15 full-time families and approximately 500 part-time residents. Properties are plentiful and beautiful view parcels are still available at reasonable prices. Southridge is one of the smaller developments on the island and Decatur Shores is one of the largest. Both include the amenities of a private airstrip, deep-water dock and wonderful no bank waterfront. On the north side of the island, Decatur Northwest is a very unique plat of about 100 sites that are second homes to many Seattle area professionals. Transportation to and from the island is by private boat or plane and many of the property owners use one of two passenger ferries that operate daily from Anacortes. Underground power, high-speed internet and excellent water availability make living on the island almost like living in “town”….only without street lights, traffic signals (or it’s accompanying traffic), espresso stands or leash laws. If you’ve always wished you could live a simpler lifestyle, Decatur Island may be the perfect location for your second home or year-round residence.

…and you have cash or a fair amount of equity in your primary residence, then the answer is YES!   The market is soft and the inventory is very high….and many sellers are willing to negotiate and you may be able to buy property that a couple of years ago, was way out of your price range.   If your job is secure, you can refinance your primary home at around 4%, and buy your vacation property for cash.  Later on, if the need arises, that property can be sold with seller financing and give you a nice monthly check to supplement your retirement income or social security.  In the meantime, you have the tax benefits of having the mortgage on your principal residence and a wonderful, relaxing “getaway” in the islands for you and your family to enjoy.

If you’re renting and paying over $1000/mo , have a good job and average or better credit….the answer is YES !  You can buy a great home at a wonderful interest rate and begin building equity right away.  When the real estate market starts to improve, you will watch your investment grow and you’ll also have the opportunity to improve your property and build additional “sweat equity”.  Which would you rather do….invest in your own place or pay someone else’s mortgage for them?  At today’s interest rates, you’ll be amazed at how much home you’ll be able to afford and some of the loan programs will enable you to buy with very little down.
