Are 'Canes able?

By Scott Linesburgh, The Record, Stockton, Calif.

June 11--STOCKTON -- Their oldest player graduated high school 23 years ago, before some of his younger teammates were born. Most hold jobs, some have families and no one makes a cent playing football.

But the diverse people who comprise the Stockton Hurricanes share a passion and a goal: They enjoy playing the game and are looking forward to a chance to win a championship for themselves and their city.

The Hurricanes' first season has been eventful and successful on and off the field. They have a 9-1 record and will host the first round of the Central Valley Football League playoffs against the Merced-based North Valley Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. today at the Grape Bowl in Lodi.

For many of the players, it's the first realistic chance they've had to win any kind of championship on a football field, so they are taking this seriously.

"A lot of the gentlemen on this team still love the game, and they love the camaraderie and the friendship," said head coach Aaron Johnson, 46. "Most are seeking their first championship and have been playing for many years. They really, really want to win this. This is the opportunity many of them have been waiting for, to get a championship trophy or ring."

Thomas McCoy has waited longer than most on the team. The 41-year-old starting linebacker and 1988 Edison High graduate is the oldest player on the team and is able to make the twice-a-week night practices at S.L. Fong Park in Stockton after spending the day as a custom-home construction worker. He played only his freshman season in high school but has participated in semi-pro ball for six years.

"This is likely the end for me, whether we win or not, so I'd really like to win a championship. But the most important thing about playing is that it's a great opportunity to do something physical that you love to do," McCoy said. "And it's important for us to do something good in Stockton. Despite what (Forbes magazine) said about this city, Stockton has a lot to offer."

Civic pride is important to the Hurricanes, according to Corey Mitchell, who owns the team, along with his wife, Lori. The team took part in the "Stockton is

Magnificent" celebration in April and twice has held events to feed and clothe those in need, among other activities.

"We live here and we think it's important to be involved," said Corey Mitchell, a Stockton resident, who works as an independent truck driver.
