The Grey Cup and Eva Avila To Rock Montreal Alouettes 2011 Season Opener

The start of the 2011 CFL season has arrived and the Alouettes have the honour of kicking things off as they host the BC Lions Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.

For the occasion, the reigning Grey Cup Champions will treat their fans to a banner-raising ceremony, and a special guest will also be in attendance in the form of the Grey Cup, the storied trophy which the Alouettes have claimed two years running now.

Following the pre-game ceremonies, the Alouettes will then put themselves to the test against the West Division powerhouse BC Lions in what promises to be a memorable game. Led by Wally Buono, the winningest coach in CFL history, the Lions are sure to be arriving in Montreal prepared for Thursday's season-opener.

Marc Trestman's men on the other hand, led by Anthony Calvillo and John Bowman, are looking forward to living up to the challenge following an especially intense training camp this spring. Both teams are sure to put on a show for Canadian Football fans, and it's certain that all eyes will be on Montreal come Thursday.

Thursday's spectacle won't be limited to the on-field happenings however, but will extend right through half-time, as Quebec-born singer Eva Avila performs for the crowd. A former Canadian Idol winner, Avila is no stranger to sporting events, having sung the national anthem prior to the 94th Grey Cup in addition to offering a memorable performance as part of the closing ceremonies at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. Her third album, recorded entirely in French, is due out soon.

Tickets for Thursday's game can be purchased by visiting MontrealAlouettes.com or by calling 514-790-1245. Alternatively, tickets can also be purchased on the day of the game at the Percival Molson Stadium ticket office, located near the stadium's main entrance along Parc Avenue.

BC Lions Memories and the 2011 Season

In the “days before kids” we used to have BC Lions season tickets. With the time and money commitments that come along with having kids, we stopped getting season tickets when the kids were young. Once a year, I would get a phone call from Seth, our BC Lions Sales Rep, asking if we wanted to buy tickets. My answer was always the same, “Not this year but please phone again next year”. This year, I had a different answer: we have our season tickets and I am looking forward to attending tonight’s game at Empire Field with my daughter. Thanks Seth, for faithfully phoning me about tickets for eleven consecutive years!

I have a couple stories to share about the arrival of my older two kids, and how their arrivals are tied to the BC Lions and BC Place Stadium.

On June 30, 1999 my wife, Barb, was pregnant with our first child… and one week overdue. This was also the first BC Lions home game of the year (a pre-season game like tonight’s game). We discussed whether or not we should go to the game. I had heard that a drop in barometric pressure was known to induce labour and theorized that leaving the pressurized stadium after the game might be just what Barb needed to trigger the baby arrival so we decided that yes, we would go to the game. On the way into the stadium, we were approached by a security guard who asked, “Excuse me ma’am, I don’t want to sound forward but would you like to know where the first aid room is?” After a good laugh, my wife said yes, it would be good to know and he provided us with directions. As it turned out, we didn’t need the first aid room, nor did leaving the stadium after the game induce labour. We enjoyed a good game and my son Casey was born two days later on July 2, 1999.

For the next two seasons, Casey was faithfully carried to the BC Lions home games and took turns sitting in our laps during the game.

The last home game of the BC Lions 2000 season, on November 4, was to be Lui Passaglia’s final home game as he was retiring. There was a celebration planned in his honour to happen after the game. The three of us arrived at the stadium and got settled into our seats, ready for an exciting game. Before the game even started, Barb said she wasn’t feeling well and decided to go to the first aid room (luckily, she knew exactly where to find it). So Casey and I were on our own to watch the game. We stopped in at the first aid room at half time to find Barb lying on a cot, resting. She confided in me that one of the female first aid attendents had talked to her quietly and said, “Do you think there is a chance you could be pregnant?” The thought had not occurred to Barb but she had to answer yes, that it was possible. After resting some more during the second half, Barb was able to make it back to our seats for Lui’s after-game celebration. A couple days later, the doctor confirmed that she was, in fact, pregnant with our second child who was born in July of the following year.
