'She knew what she wanted'

It was in 1986 and a cast of actors with adolescence Children's Theatre of Charlotte was in rehearsal for a production of "Godspell."

"It would not be nice if we had a flute?" someone asked.

"I play the flute!" Kristen Anderson adds, one of the young actors. With its typical high-energy, problem solving attitude, she pulled a flute from a bag and started to play.

It is a time Charlotte Director Kevin Campbell recalls fondly. He said he could see way back when the young artist had the skills and ambition to succeed.

And she did.More recently, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, 39, co-written songs for the Disney version of "Winnie the Pooh" with his Tony Award-winning husband, Robert Lopez. And plays the voice of Kanga, Roo's mother.

For Anderson-Lopez, his art comes easily. She says the creative process is like being 5 years and go to someone's house and say, "What do you play?"

She also adapted and Lopez "Finding Nemo" in a musical theater production. It opened in 2007 and operates five days a week at Disney World.

"For many children, it is their first exposure to theater," she said."You really have to cultivate a love for this art form."

Anderson-Lopez is the daughter of John and Erin Anderson of Waxhaw. John Anderson, a freelance columnist for the Charlotte News Observer Union, saw the love of his daughter for the early flowering stage.

When he took four years to Kristen's first play, "His eyes were focused on the stage - they did not decline," he said. "She knew what she wanted to do."

In 1986, 14, Kristen moved with his family in Westchester, NY, Charlotte Myers Park neighborhood.She enrolled at Charlotte Country Day, where she was considered a "very strange, enthusiastic New Yorker."

His family life was chaotic at the time - her mother had given birth to twins.

Kristen fell in musical productions at the Theatre of Charlotte Children.

She made her breath ghost opera lovers in her convertible Jeep.

"When most kids were listening to REM, I listened to Sondheim," she said.

She sang, danced and played, but his love of writing was always brewing.It has already changed a school production of "My Fair Lady", so that everyone had a speaking role.

After high school, Charlotte Anderson-Lopez left double major in drama and psychology at Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduating in 1994 as the elected President of class, she was offered a job in investment banking. The penny of his parents, Anderson-Lopez went to New York for the interview. But when she saw a magazine display for a musical theater audition, she jumped at the interview.
