Embracing the Mini-van
It's quite the scene to get four small kids into a vehicle. When we leave the house, no one ever operates at the same speed. There is an occasional leader, usually a runaway, often a dawdler, and most certainly a willful straggler. The kids all take turns in each of these roles. I usually hold the front door open and manage the coming and going with one foot in and one foot out of the house.
This is the moment where I love my Odyssey and what I consider to be its most important feature - the remote controlled power sliding door. I can manage when kids enter and exit all at the push of a button. For the leader, he runs and zip he's in. If he thinks about transitioning to the runaway...Nope! Door closed and locked, all while I'm coaxing the willful straggler out of the door. There is only one type of vehicle that has this feature. Yep, it's a mini-van.
Some of my friends couldn't embrace the mini-van, but I didn't think twice about it. My identity has never been wrapped up in the car I drive. I'm pretty pragmatic when it comes to transportation. Does it get me where I need to go? Is it affordable? Does it not use up OPEC's daily output of crude to run it?
So when it came time to choose a vehicle for our growing family, I just needed to answer a few more questions. How easy is it for small children to get in and out of? Is it going to have enough room for us (and all of our stuff) to take the road trips we like to go on? Is it comfortable to drive? Can we transport some friends around too? The Odyssey answered yes to all of these questions.
So here I am seven years later - still driving my Ody. We don't plan on getting rid of it until it's on its last leg. The only vehicle that might get me out of the Ody before she dies would be my dream version of the ultimate family ride - a hybrid, VW Microbus, complete with pop-top camper, sleeping for at least six and of course a sliding door. Oh yeah baby!
I used to dream of driving a VW Microbus when I was a kid. My best friend from childhood and I had a goal of owning one together and living on the road. We had it all worked out, even the paint, which was rainbow, of course.
But alas it is not a reality, yet. VW has some concepts out, but nothing in development. If it does start to come off of the assembly line, I would snatch it up in a second and christen it with a grand cross country road trip with all of the kids. Then maybe I would wrap my identity up in a ride like that.

How I solved it: the sliding door has 2 latches front and rear. The rear one was slightly misaligned by height. So I adjusted the door height by turning 10mm bolt that holds the rear slider on the door (with the spring on it) - sorry I don't know how it is called properly. It can be easily adjusted by several mm up or down. After that the sound disappeared.
