Poor PS3 Sales & Japanese Quake Cause $191m Q1 Loss for Sony Corp.
The earthquake that devastated large portions of Japan are what Sony points to as the chief reason sales of the powerful PS3 have dipped in the first quarter, causing the company a net loss of $191 million US dollars. This is the case despite the analysis that the recovery effort is moving faster than expected. PS3 sales dropped to 1.8 million, from 2.4 million the same time last year.
Despite sluggish console sales, the software for the PS3 has seen an increase in sales, up to 26.1 million units compared to 24.8 million last year. Even though they are in something of a slump as far as hardware sales go, Sony fully expects to outsell last year’s totals for the full fiscal year. Sony predicts that they will sell 15 million units over the 14.3 million they sold last year. Sony also projects that their software sales will hold steady at about 148 million units sold.
Sales of the PSP were up last quarter while the PS2 saw a moderate decrease in sales, from 1.6 million to 1.4 million. Sony’s Consumer Products and Services division saw sales decrease by 13% due in part to low sales in the US and Europe, as well as stiff competition in the PC arena.
