Travel advice: data roaming charges
Donald Strachan, specialist in travel technology, writes
It's true that using data abroad can be expensive but leaving your smartphone
at home is a bit drastic. Most UK networks offer prepaid European travel
data bundles –15 MB daily for £1.50 for O2 contract customers, for example.
Networks must also cut you off when your monthly data bill reaches €50,
unless you request a higher limit. Roaming data costs substantially more
outside the EU.
To keep data bills as low as possible, iPhone users should install Onavo. Fire up this app in a new country and it keeps you updated as to your usage and compresses data heading into your phone, thereby squeezing perhaps 50 per cent extra out of any data bundle. The app is free from iTunes for now, but charges are planned. Find a list of supported networks in almost 100 countries at www.getsatisfaction.com/onavo . An Android version is scheduled for release later this month. For now, the 3G Watchdog app tracks your data use; it's free from the Android Market.
Unfortunately, you could eat up a few megabytes just finding your hotel on Google Maps, so these tricks still don't exactly enable seamless home-and-abroad smartphone use. To avoid data bills altogether, switch roaming off before you leave. On an iPhone, push the data roaming slider to off at Settings>General>Network. Android users should uncheck data roaming at Settings>Wireless & Networks >Mobile Networks. This eliminates some of your phone's functionality, but it doesn't hobble it altogether – and has the odd benefit, such as extending battery life. Instant access to a local map is one of the smart-phone's key benefits for travel, and all is not lost if you're without a web connection.
Android users can pre-download a map covering a 10-mile radius from anywhere: enable the "Download map area" feature via the Labs tab in your Google Maps app and follow instructions. For iPhone users, an app called ForeverMap ( www.skobbler.co.uk/apps/forevermap ; £1.49) gives offline access to zoomable European country maps. Destinations outside Europe should be available "within three months". Download whatever countries you need over Wi-Fi before you leave. Any onboard map should work in tandem with your device's inbuilt GPS to guide you as you walk without using data.
If you're downloading a travel-guide app, make sure that it also includes "offline maps". Time Out publishes iPhone apps, with a range of eight cities, and Lonely Planet covers over 70 destinations (£3.99). Apps from Spotted by Locals ( www.spottedbylocals.com/iphone-apps ; £2.99) are written by locally-based writers with a real insider voice and offbeat cities among 33 titles. Travelfish's eight apps are the best for Asia ( www.travelfish.org ; £5.49). The best Android traveller apps are in the DK Eyewitness Top 10 series ( www.traveldk.com/apps ; £2.49), covering 10 cities.
Review of The Almost's Monster Monster - CCMForum
Well I got a few new albums a while back, so I shall try to review them all for you guys to enjoy. This one is a bit of an oldie, still great nonetheless though. This album is by The Almost, and is called Monster Monster. It came out back in early October of 2009, but hey. It’s still an awesome album though so I’m going to review it for all of you.
The album opens up with the title track, and although for the first few verses it seems to go along nicely, things start getting repetitive after that. It seems odd compared to all the other songs when it comes to this. I believe the band could have had a much better opening than this and I was disappointed to say the least. The album gets better though with the next track Lonely Wheel , a song about sin. In it Aaron sings “One last night at the lonely wheel / One last taste of the sin we feel / One hope in the fear that drives us on / One last drink just to kill the pain / One last breath before we say your name.” We sin, and we do it again and again saying to ourselves this will be the last time. We continue to deceive ourselves though but eventually we realize we need to give into God. “I’m giving in to You.”
The theme of redemption continues in the next song No I Don’t ) and is very memorable and one that I enjoy a good deal. The melody is a great one which fits the mood of the song and Aaron’s voice superbly. I couldn’t have thought of any better song to end the album with.
So overall I’m going to give this album three and a half stars out of a total five. Overall I would say this is a great album worth buying, but some songs simply weren’t as appealing as they could have been. The Almost have come a long way though since Southern Weather was released back in 2007. I’m sure that things will only continue to improve when the next album comes around. Be sure to keep your eyes out for part 2 of this review, where we review the Deluxe Edition songs!
