Purgatorio heads for the Baxter
Ariel Dorfman, an acclaimed novelist, playwright, poet, essayist, journalist and political commentator, well-known for works such as Death and the Maiden (for which he won an Olivier Award ) and Reader and Widows , is extremely excited about his play being staged in South Africa. “It is a country that has been through so much pain and struggle against deception as much as it has against oppression. I think it will take on a deeper meaning with Cape Town audiences and artists,” said Dorfman. About Purgatorio , he explains, “I had been wondering for a long time about the terrible things we humans do to one another, and how - indeed if - there can be some sort of reparation. I particularly loved the challenge of writing a piece that transpires in the landscape of the mutual mind, meaning that what we are seeing is the place where two souls meet and fight and discover they will always be lonely and, simultaneously, that they will always have the other close by, waiting, twinned for eternity. It can be seen as a poetic enquiry into the themes of forgiveness and retribution.” Last year Dorfman attended a performed reading of Purgatorio at the Baxter Theatre Centre when he was in South Africa to deliver the prestigious Eighth Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. Time magazine has named him a “literary grandmaster” and Newsweek called him “one of the greatest living Latin American novelists”. The Guardian and Seattle Post Intelligencer have described his work as “fascinating, brilliant, elegantly funny yet dramatically intelligent.” He is a Chilean citizen who was forced into exile in the USA after the 1973 coup that overthrew Allende and currently is a professor at Duke University in North Carolina. Women were essentially not recognized as citizens. (Kind of like a certain modern-day religion which I will refrain from naming.)
But the society compensated for that somehow with their multitude of female deities. Athena, Nike, Aphrodite (as the other answerer noted), etc.
Unfortunately the typical societal role. Make babies. Cook dinner. Obey the husband. Be quiet. Have no opinions of your own.
Tallish, black hair, brown/blue eyes, olive skin complexion. Grecian women are still beautiful.
