Know the pros, cons of controlling moss

Garden calendar (6/30/11) Lawns: Do not pick up clippings. They feed the lawn. Mow high (3 inches) to help fight weeds and only take one inch off when you mow.

Raspberries and Strawberries: Water.

Chickweed: If you have it, it is in flower. Pull it and remove from the garden to prevent seeds.

Class: 10 a.m. on Monday, July 25 at In The Garden Nursery, Jane Baldwin will discuss slugs and effectively using mulches. Free, but register at 346-4247.

RoundUp: Have you read the articles? huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/24/roundup-scientists-birth-defects_n_883578.html or google “roundup and birth defects.” Do you really still want to touch the stuff? If you are inclined (and I sure would be), take yours to the hazardous waste site for disposal.

Oh, oh. Instant dilemma for me. I didn’t want the nursery to lose the sale, but I know that lime will not control moss even though each and every one of us has been told at one time or another that if you have a mossy lawn, you need to apply lime to control it.

So, right at the top of the column, here it is: Lime applications won’t stop moss in a lawn from growing. What they might do is help the lawn grow a bit thicker and anything that helps the lawn grow thicker will help cover up moss in it. Moss doesn’t crowd out grass. It grows in bare spots and, once established, grass won’t grow through it. By the way, since dolomitic lime contains magnesium and calcium, it is possible that by adding it, you will also make conditions much less favorable for dandelions.

Still, in all cases, lime applications are not needed at all unless the lawn pH is below 5.5. You cannot tell a lawn soil pH by the presence or absence of moss. A soil test is needed to determine this. The take-home lesson here is to make sure you test your soil. Many nurseries and the Cooperative Extension Service will conduct the test for you if you bring in a sample of soil. Actually, take several from different areas of the lawn.

The rule of thumb is that you can only change the pH of a lawn one point per season. Your nursery or the Extension can tell you how much lime that will take. Anything over 35 pounds per 1,000 square feet on an established lawn will most probably simply wash away into the water table.

Arsenic dissolved in water is acutely toxic and can lead to a number of health problems. Long term exposure in excess of 50 ppb causes increased risks of cancer of skin, lungs, bladder and kidney. It also causes skin pigmentation and skin thickening, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, numbness in hands and feet, partial paralysis, and blindness. It can also lead to disturbance of the cardio vascular and nervous system functions and can eventually lead to death. The symptoms caused by chronic arsenic ingestion are collectively known as “arsenicosis”.
