A soil test is needed to determine this. The take-home lesson here is to make sure you test your soil. Many nurseries and the Cooperative Extension Service will conduct the test for you if you bring in a sample of soil. Actually, take several from different areas of the lawn.
The rule of thumb is that you can only change the pH of a lawn one point per season. Your nursery or the Extension can tell you how much lime that will take. Anything over 35 pounds per 1,000 square feet on an established lawn will most probably simply wash away into the water table.
