Lacrosse player reaches peak at college level

Alec Bialosky, of Moreland Hills, knew he wanted to continue to play lacrosse upon graduating from Hawken School in 2007.

A powerhouse attackman for the Hawks, Bialosky enjoyed playing high school lacrosse with great dudes and coach he loved, he said. After graduating, he wanted to play on a good team and win at the collegiate level.

Tufts University in Medford, Mass., near Boston, was his top choice. His older brother, Danny, who graduated from Hawken in 2005, already was there.

"I already knew about them, and my brother was on the team, so I wanted to go on to play lacrosse, and I wanted to be on a good team and win," Bialosky said. "That meant no D-I schools. Tufts was a big D-III school near Boston, and all the other good D-III schools were pretty small and out in the middle of nowhere."

In his freshman year, Bialosky tried out for the team, and everyone who made the team got their jersey, except for him, he said. There was one spot left on the team, and he had to participate in extended tryout with three other guys for an additional week.

"The whole thing with that was I was so used to being the best player when in high school, and then, clearly, I wasn't the best," Bialosky said. "It was pretty nerve wracking, and then I got the last jersey on the team as a freshman."

Sitting on the bench his first year wasn't going to work. It motivated him to get his act together and work harder in the off-season, he said. After making the team his sophomore year, he was last on the depth chart for attackman.

"I went to the assistant coach and told him I was upset about it, and he said, 'Well come play defense for me,'" Bialosky said.

Wanting more game action, he switched to long-stick midfielder and played backup his sophomore year, taking about one out of every three runs on the field, he said.

The transition was rough at first, as he didn't really understand what his role was during off-ball action while playing his new position, he said.

"Playing on ball was actually the easiest part, but it was the off-ball stuff that I had to learn, and it took a while to come around. My coach was great, and I just met with him every day to go over details," Bialosky said. "With the ball it wasn't a hard transition at all. I didn't have to learn any new skills like throwing or catching. You just have to adjust to it. But it's all the same fundamentals, and it's pretty transferable.

Vox Populi » Update: Worker dies in construction accident on campus

, The 36-year-old construction worker involved in this morning’s accident died from the injuries sustained in the accident.

The contractor, who was pinned down by a forklift, was freed by her coworkers and given CPR before emergency crews arrived on the scene.

According to Rachel Pugh , director of media relations, the Whiting Turner contractor was taken to the George Washington University Hospital by DC Fire and EMS. The scene is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Original post: A construction worker at Georgetown University was severely injured Wednesday morning in an accident, according to DC Fire and EMS.

The worker was a priority one transport for traumatic injuries at approximately 8:30 this morning . The DC Fire and EMS twitter account later noted that the worker was pinned under a forklift and had serious, life-threatening injuries.

A construction worker at the site of the science building currently under construction on campus confirmed for Vox Our construction manager for this project, Whiting-Turner Construction, informed us later this morning that the worker’s injuries were fatal.  Out of respect for the needs of workers, the jobsite has been shut down for the day.  The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the incident.  At this time it is not clear whether the injuries were work related or due to some kind of medical emergency.  Our thoughts and prayers remain with the individual’s family, coworkers and personnel impacted by this sad news.  University officials remain in touch with Whiting-Turner and are available to support the family as needed during this time.

@ Sympathetic – I’m not positive, but I think GW is the first defense in emergency care in this area- patients will be taken to GW before GU for emergencies regardless of where they are. GU specializes in other things besides ER care; I think this was discussed on another thread somewhere on Vox, but I can’t put my finger on which.

@Sympathetic, it’s not embarrassing AT ALL for that reason. GW’s hospital has a level 1 trauma center; Georgetown doesn’t (although we do have other special centers that other area hospitals don’t have–neurosurgery, for one).

In a major city like DC (and elsewhere of course, but very clearly here) hospitals have different capabilities as a way to manage limited funding and limited manpower. No sense in having two level 1 trauma centers a mile and a half apart. Better to maximize patient care in certain areas than spread it around and dilute it, right? Or would you rather have a greater number of much crappier centers at GUH?
