Student progress tempts Des Moines board to sweeten Sebring's pay package

About Sebring's current compensation

Des Moines public schools Superintendent Nancy Sebring is paid $206,178 a year.
She also receives an annual car allowance of $6,000 and a $34,019 annuity contribution, according to her contract, which ends today. She received a 7 percent raise - about $14,700 - last year, during which more than 100 teaching positions were eliminated to help offset an $11 million funding shortfall.
Sebring earns more than the superintendents of the Davenport and Cedar Rapids school districts. Each district has hired a new superintendent within the past four years, and each pays its leader just under $200,000 a year.
Local and national comparisons by the Register show leaders of urban districts with more than 25,000 students, on average, are paid $225,897. Regionally, superintendents are paid $142,726 each, according to a study by the Educational Research Service in Virginia. A district similar to Des Moines in Fort Wayne, Ind., pays its leader $174,500 a year and hasn't provided her a raise for the past two years.

Gains have been made in Des Moines students' academic performance and graduation rates during the five years Superintendent Nancy Sebring has led the district, a Des Moines Register review of achievement data shows.

Those gains have school board members - concerned over the possibility Sebring will be lured away - poised to increase the superintendent's compensation package.

Sebring's contract expires today, but board President Connie Boesen said the board doesn't need to make an urgent decision about how much of a raise to give her.

"During these challenging times in education, the Des Moines school board is willing to display our confidence in Nancy Sebring as our superintendent," Boesen said in a written statement in April.

The board is studying superintendent salaries in districts similar in size to Des Moines, some of which pay their superintendents around $250,000, Boesen said. That would be an increase of more than 20 percent from Sebring's current $206,178 salary.

Sebring, in her application in March for the superintendent's job in Boulder, Colo., touted improvements in Des Moines' students academic performance during her tenure that began in 2006. She wrote that under her guidance, the academic achievement gap between white and minority students has narrowed and the district's graduation rate has improved.

Naturalization Application--Failure to file Selective Service ...

My boyfriend was issued a green card in September, 2006 and he is about to start the process of applying for U.S. citizenship. Then, as he was filling out the N-400, he found out that he was supposed to register with the Selective Service when he first arrived in the U.S. in 2006 (he was 25 at that time) but he did not because he was not aware of this requirement. He is currently 29 years old, therefore, he can no longer register at this time. He also confirmed that he is not registered by checking his status on Selective Service Status website. I wish to inform you that for application of naturalization a person must show that a person is ready to bear arms for USA. In this if your boyfriend is not registered then he must provide evidence that his failure to register was not knowing and willful or that he was not required to register. A non-registrant may not be denied any benefit if he can "show by a preponderance of evidence" that his failure to register was not knowing and willful. Offer as much evidence supporting your case, and as much detail, as possible.
