A Houston attorney charged with attempting to receive, receiving and possessing child pornography as well with destruction of records remains in federal custody. At a July 2 detention hearing and arraignment, U.S. Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley ordered Warren Reid Williamson held without bond based on the court’s finding that Williamson presents a danger to the community, says Angela Dodge, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas in Houston. Terry W. Yates , one of Williamson’s attorneys and the principal in Houston’s Terry W. Yates & Associates, says there is a presumption in federal cases involving children or drugs that the defendant presents a danger to the community. Botley did not feel the defendant has overcome that presumption, Yates says. In a nine-count indictment that a federal grand jury handed up June 25, Williamson is charged with one count of attempting to receive material that contained child pornography, six counts of receiving child pornography, one count of possessing child pornography on a computer and one count of “knowingly altering, destroying or mutilating” computer files and images to impede an investigation. Yates says Williamson, a general practitioner with an emphasis on personal injury law in his practice, faces an Aug. 19 jury trial in U.S. District Judge Sim Lake’s court. Williamson entered a plea of not guilty, Yates says. If convicted, Williamson faces up to 20 years in prison on each charge of attempting to receive or receiving child pornography and up to 10 years on the possession of child pornography charge, according to a press release from the office of U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle of Houston. As noted in the press release, the destruction of records charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.  All counts also carry a maximum fine of $250,000.
