America's “armored” present to the Georgian army

Moscow would not be glad to hear that at the Krtsanisi National Training Center the official representative of the United States gave the Georgian Defense Ministry 40 armored vehicles to prepare the additional battalion that will be sent to Afghanistan to participate in the ISAF operation.

The official statement by the defense ministry refers to the vehicles as Hummers. However, only the H1, H2 and H3 type of civil versions bear this name; military cars are called HMMWV, which stands for “High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle”.

The vehicles presented to Georgia from the Pentagon consist of two models of the Humvee:the M-1151 (30 cars) and the M-1151A1 (10 cars). They belong to the third generation of Humvee and differ from each other mainly by their reinforced armor.

The Humvee is a car with armor rather than an armored car. It is mostly intended for patrolling purposes, as it can carry only 5 people. Nevertheless, if installed with a weapon stronger than a machine-gun (e.g. anti-tank missile complexes), the Humvee will become highly mobile and will provide an effective means to fight high-mobility anti-tank units. If installed with thermal target zenith-missile devices, the Humvee crews will have the ability to shoot down low-flying helicopters and enemy aircraft.

Nevertheless, it is too early to speak about such perspectives, as most soldiers being sent to Afghanistan will be trained with the armored cars. After the August War with Russia, the Georgian army received the first batch of Humvees (M1151A1) in spring 2009 and the battalions that have returned from Afghanistan are trained with those cars.

Presumably, the battalion will not take these Humvees with them to Afghanistan. This would be very costly and in the mined-territories of Helmond Province, Georgian troops are traveling in MRAPs, which are better protected than the HMMWV.
