Since 2H10, the Turkish banking sector has been under pressure due to a combination of regulatory actions and the declining margins weighing on profitability. We think that Turkish banks have fundamental value and are particularly attractive, with a highly-regulated financial system and Turkey's growth potential when compared to EMEA peers. After outperforming their peers both in terms of earnings and asset growth in the last three years and having shown great resilience during the financial turmoil, the playground of Turkish banks has changed in 2011. They now operate in a low interest rate environment and are likely to be further put under pressure by regulatory bodies. Our forecasts for the sector (25% loan growth, 65-80bp margin compression, slight increase in provisions, 15% fee growth) corresponds to a 10% decline in net earnings for 2011. For our coverage, this is 7%. Since the beginning of the year, the consensus has revised estimates downwards by 8%, but this is still lower than our assumptions. We therefore expect the downward revisions to continue in the coming quarters. Our forecasts are 12% below consensus projections for 2011 for our coverage universe, which stems mainly from NIM assumptions. As was accepted by the market and the managements, the landscape for Turkish banks has changed in 2011, and the sector has entered into a more challenging year, with rising regulatory pressures, declining margins and deteriorating earnings outlook. In this section, we want to underline what we have witnessed so far in the sector, and what we should expect for the remainder of the year for Turkish banks. The key investment points we highlight are as follows; -Black clouds to remain in 2012, only partially. We expect that regulatory pressure will continue in 2012. Turkish banks will continue to be hurt by RRR hikes with a lag, and with a possible rise in the interest rates. In the meantime, our loans and deposit growth estimates of 20% and 10% for 2012 imply further suppression in the loans to deposits ratio for the sector, which would put additional pressure on the margins.

A Barefoot Therapist Speaks: What is CBT?

CBT, I argue, isn't a therapy; it's the umbrella term for a host of therapeutic methods. It includes Stress Inoculation, REBT, Exposure Therapy, Attribution Training, Self-Control methods, Beck's CT, and lots, lots more. On the whole we can categorise the CBTs into CTs and BTs, though any given implementation is likely to have fuzzier edges than that might suggest. For instance: are behavioural experiments a BT or a CT? I'd come down on the side of them being a CT, as they are meant to be persuasive . But opinions differ. What we are doing is identifying unhelpful habitual responses, and teaching our clients how to retrain themselves out of those responses. In doing this they may exploit (under our guidance) a variety of psychological effects such as dissonance, habituation, overlearning, reciprocal inhibition, response competition and so on. So, exposure therapy retrains a certain visceral reaction, what we call The patient who shrieks and feels nauseous on seeing a worm is not typical of those I've encountered. More commonly the patient shrieks and feels nauseous for no apparent reason, or he is sure the reason is one thing when it's really another thing. Making the real reason apparent is the cognitive bit, to my way of thinking. Few patients hand their therapists the worm on a plate, as it were. Beck's CT is the basis of a methodology for finding it.
