THE FIRST ATTEMPT to phone Judy

Collins’ cellphone in England doesn’t get through, but rarely does missing a call

provide such a great pleasure.

Before going to her voice mail, you’re treated to that unmistakable alto tone, for which "crystal clear" has become one of the most frequently used descriptions in music history, delivering an a cappella rendition of the Second World War-era ballad I’ll Be Seeing You. First-time callers must be at a loss for words when the harsh beep snaps them out of their brief reverie and demands some sort of reply.

The tune couldn’t be more appropriate as the 72-year-old icon of song will be seeing us in the old, familiar place of Canso as a headliner at this weekend’s Stan Rogers Folk Festival.

She performs on the mainstage on Sunday night and at what will likely be one of the most packed daytime stages, Fox Island, for an hour-long set on Sunday at 4 p.m.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Collins’ first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow.

Her life is as busy as it has ever been. She still plays roughly 100 shows per year. She released her CD Paradise in 2010, has the musical memoir Sweet Judy Blue Eyes out and a new album due for release later this fall.

When her phone rings through a few minutes later, Collins is in a car travelling from Southampton to London, to fly home to New York prior to heading up to Nova Scotia for the first time in more than a decade.

The Seattle-born singer immediately expresses her enthusiasm for coming back to Canada, a country she feels she owes a strange sort of debt for producing songwriters whom she’s been closely associated over the years. First on the list is Joni Mitchell, whose Both Sides Now and Chelsea Morning were masterfully interpreted by Collins in the late ’60s, followed closely by Leonard Cohen, whose Suzanne and Bird on a Wire achieved an even higher state of grace in her capable hands.

Back in 2007 the band Linkin Park released a very anti-government album known entitled ‘Minutes to Midnight’ almost every song on the album was a message to the government, this song ‘No More Sorrow’ is no exception.

Many believe that this song is about the deception game starting with 09/11 and going right up to the two wars launched as a direct result of those attacks, the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq [do you tell yourself I don't realize you crusade's ( Iraq = Modern Day Babylon ) a disguise, replace FREEDOM (what we had prior 09/11) with FEAR (life after the 'Patriot Act') you trade MONEY (cost of war) for LIVES (mortality rate of wars and 09/11)]. They’ve also got another song called ‘The Little Things Give You Away’ which we’ll probably do sometime later today that’s a direct shot at the botched response of tragedy Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
