'Papa' Hemingway still casts a long shadow

The Nobel- and Pulitzer Prize-winning author died 50 years ago this weekend, killing himself at 61 (on July 2, 1961) with a gunshot, a violent end to what can only be described as a turbulent, hard-driving and over-the-top life. Four wives, seven novels, six short-story collections and enough booze to float his beloved boat, Pilar. Throw in a few bullfights for good measure.

Not that he's really dead.

This summer he's "co-starring" in a hit movie, Woody Allen 's Midnight in Paris ; plays a major role in a best-selling novel, The Paris Wife by Paula McLain; and is the subject a number of other new books, including Hemingway's Boat , which follows the writer's life on his 38-foot motor yacht, out in September. There's even a laugh-out-loud parody, just published, called The Heming Way .

"I think Hemingway still captures people's imaginations for different reasons," says Corey Stoll , who plays the writer in Midnight in Paris. Three, to be exact.

"On the level of style, it seems like he's pretty much unequaled in his influence on 20th-century American writing," Stoll says. "In terms of speaking to our celebrity culture, he was a master of shaping and spreading the larger-than-life image he projected. And in terms of masculinity, I think some men are nostalgic for his apologetically macho stance. And some women, even ones smart enough to know better, find that attractive."

Stoll's Hemingway character is exaggerated in the movie, speaking in terse minimalistic staccato sentences. Hemingway style.

Hemingway became famous for his distinctive delivery, a style that influenced other writers of 20th-century fiction. His first novel, The Sun Also Rises , published in 1926, became an instant classic. It was followed by A Farewell to Arms , For Whom the Bell Tolls , The Old Man and the Sea and, posthumously, A Moveable Feast , the tale of his life in 1920s Paris among what Gertrude Stein called "The Lost Generation."

McLain, whose The Paris Wife is based on Hemingway's first marriage to Hadley Richardson and their life during that much-romanticized period in Paris, realizes Woody Allen's film is a comedy, but she says the real Hemingway is lost in the process.

As you begin to explore furniture stores on your quest to find new furniture for various bedrooms in the house, you will notice that there are extreme variations in price, even between beds that appear to be similar and of comparable quality. What makes the difference in the price, and what are the least expensive bed materials that you can purchase?

If you’re looking at discounted bedroom furniture , you are going to find a mix of prices on different materials. In addition, with standard store pricing, cherry bedroom furniture is probably going to be the highest cost material you will find. The wood itself is not as common as cedar or oak, and it’s more difficult to manufacture. Mahogany is also a higher-end material. Both cedar and oak can be found for reasonable prices. This inexpensive bedroom furniture is especially nice because it can be stained to appear similar in color to more expensive woods, so you can achieve the same design factors for a smaller price.

Less expensive than these wood beds are some types of metal beds. For example, brass beds will cost about the same as a typical cedar or oak bed . A brass bed will last a long time and be quite sturdy, though it requires a little more care than wood and will need to be polished every once in awhile and frequently rubbed down for fingerprints to maintain shine. Wrought iron beds are inexpensive as well, and when you’re purchasing master bedroom furniture, you will find that this is a popular option on the market with a lot of styles to choose from. A wood and iron bed can run you about the same price as well, giving you another decorating opportunity altogether.

One of the most inexpensive materials you will find is MDF – medium density fiberboard. Though constructed in the same manner as the flimsy particle board that’s found in the drawer bottoms of so many cheap dressers, this material is thicker and stronger and, due to the resin, is even heavier than wood. Many casual sets will include at least some MDF to save on the cost of manufacturing, making the end product cheaper and more appealing to consumers.

Why don’t we go forward with this post. Of all the various materials that bedding is made out of, aluminum is probably the least expensive. While it’s durable, it does not tend to last as long as other materials, rusting, becoming tarnished, or flaking (especially if painted). This material is commonly used in kids’ bedroom sets because they’re replaced more frequently and therefore do not need to hold up as long. Also, since Mom and Dad have to spend money to replace their boy’s or girl’s bedroom furniture a couple of times, they want to save on the cost, and aluminum is the least expensive way to go.
