Three national parks, off the beaten trail marker

I love national parks. Last summer I had the chance to visit three. My travels took me last July 1 to the north, in Acadia, on the coast of Maine and later in the West for a family vacation with my husband, Scott Robinson, and our youngest daughter, Hannah, to Yellowstone and Grand Teton. In each case, I tried to think outside the box.

Acadia National Park

A century ago, before gas costs $ 4 a gallon, before eco-tourism has become fashionable in the days when this mountainous region to preserve, on the rocky shores of Maine was still a playground for private the rich, the industrialist and philanthropist John D.Rockefeller Jr. had a vision to keep away from the emerging threat: the automobile.

This vision has produced the historic carriage road to Mount Desert Island, a 51 mile network of gravel roads and bridges built of granite under the supervision of Rockefeller from 1913 to 1940. He eventually sold the system to the American people - with one third of land in what is now the Acadia National Park - and now the road transport, almost all contained within the park are a wonderful way to escape the traffic and to explore its pristine beauty.

Open to joggers, hikers, bikers and skiers - and the carriage - the road cut through spruce and hemlock-covered mountains, glaciers surround the form of lakes, streams gurgling Cross and views spectacular ocean. My friend Carol and I set out to conquer a bicycle on a sunny morning. We wanted to take a quick lunch at Jordan Pond House, founded as a tea house in 1870 and famous for its popovers served hot with butter and strawberry jam and then explore the trails beyond.

We started near Bar Harbor (with the exception of campgrounds, there is no housing in Acadia good, so those with the movement of preferences of a bed and indoor plumbing to remain in towns on the outskirts of the park). For $ 24 per day, including helmet, lock and map the utmost importance (and bungee cords if you need it), each of us rented a cruiser bike to bike shop Bar Harbor (barharborbike.com) .

We rode a few blocks to the village square, where a bicycle express shuttle was waiting, a part of the system of the Acadia Island Explorer, an efficient bus service and free.

The driver dropped us off at the head of Eagle Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Acadia. We started with lunch in mind, along the west side. Four miles and one hour later (the roads are hilly) we were on the banks of the Jordan Pond, and ready to eat.

« Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity - eBook - by Ugural ...

This is the eBook version of the printed book. If the print book includes a CD-ROM, this content is not included within the eBook version.

This systematic exploration of real-world stress analysis has been completely revised and updated to reflect state-of-the-art methods and applications now in use throughout the fields of aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics. Distinguished by its exceptional visual interpretations of the solutions, it offers an in-depth coverage of the subjects for students and practicing engineers. The authors carefully balance comprehensive treatments of solid mechanics, elasticity, and computer-oriented numerical methods. In addition, a wide range of fully worked illustrative examples and an extensive problem sets—many taken directly from engineering practice—have been incorporated.

Key additions to the Fourth Edition of this highly acclaimed textbook are materials dealing with failure theories, fracture mechanics, compound cylinders, numerical approaches, energy and variational methods, buckling of stepped columns, common shell types, and more. Contents include stress, strain and stress-strain relations, problems in elasticity, static and dynamic failure criteria, bending of beams and torsion of bars, finite difference and finite element methods, axisymmetrically loaded members, beams on elastic foundations, energy methods, elastic stability, plastic behavior of materials, stresses in plates and shells, and selected references to expose readers to the latest information in the field.

Mobipocket is a versatile eBook format. Unfortunately, Amazon bought the company for the technology and now is letting it somewhat whither. At one point they were the king of device support. The reader presently works on: PC, Windows mobile, Pocket PC, Franklin, Blackberry, Smartphone, PalmOs, Symbian. It's important to remember that Mobipocket requires a onetime online registration/creation of a "PID" (Personal IDentifier), which is a unique identifier. Your PID is required so that your device is linked to your reader thereby empowering you to read DRM content (Digital Rights Management). Excellent navigation features are available via Adobe such as bookmarks and a quick access table of contents. Text search is easily accessible. An Adobe DRM-protected file is different than a pdf file in that it uses Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology, which authors and publishers use to protect their content from illegal online distribution and to set certain privileges such as restrictions on copying and printing.
