Farmers and Crafters Market opens this week

If it’s Wednesday, it’s all about the Farmers and Crafters Market. Featuring “just picked” Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, herbs and plants, and crafters with handmade treats and treasures, the Farmers Market on the Tabernacle grounds at Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue makes its seasonal debut Wednesday, June 29, continuing weekly on Wednesday through Sept. 7.

Sponsored by the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce, the market celebrates its 10th season with fresh corn and blueberries, peaches, strawberries and famous Jersey tomatoes along with homemade jams and jellies, applesauce, baskets and an endless assortment of crafts.

“It’s a wonderful farmer’s market,” said Nancy Neal, who along with Rosemarie Savastano organizes the market for the chamber. “It gets better and better every year.”

Established with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, local “Jersey Fresh” farmer’s markets are designed to benefit local farmers by exposing them to new outlets to sell their produce and sustain their farms.

Neal says Ocean City’s market is a “win-win” for the farmers, local residents and visitors and downtown merchants because it lures large crowds of people to the foot of the downtown every week.

“Ocean City is unique, we have a new audience every week,” she said. “While we do get a lot of regulars, and local people who come weekly, a lot of people just come to Ocean City for the week. So you have a lot of new people who then discover the downtown and walk Asbury Avenue, shop and eat lunch. It’s a big draw and everyone benefits. We reach so many different people over the summer.”

The market is open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The selection depends on the growing season and what’s available.

The market, Neal said, offers a chance to “live green” while offering the added benefit of a “meet and greet,” visiting with friends and neighbors.

“You see a lot of people talking to one another,” she said. “It’s like old-home week for the locals, you run into a lot of people that you know. You see the conversations. I’ve met a lot of new people, everyone is friendly and happy. It doesn’t get any better, bringing Jersey Fresh to the island rather than everyone on the island having to go to the market.”

Fresh, homemade mozzarella from Tony Boloney’s in Atlantic City is “not to be missed,” said Savastano. “He makes his own pasta and marinara, too.
