Senior Living: More people are praying for their health, study says
A recent study at the University of Massachusetts published in the journal of Psychology of Religion and Spirituality reported that more people are praying for their health. Almost half of all Americans pray for their health. This is an increase from a previous survey in 2002 which found that 43 percent of all Americans said that they prayed for their health.
Researchers have been unable to identify the reason for the increase. Some believe that increased public awareness about the power of prayer played a role, while others pointed to the changes in our thinking as a nation after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The study looked at the kinds of people who pray and what they pray about. Women, African Americans and the elderly prayed more than others. These segments of the population tend to struggle economically and/or deal with health issues. Not surprisingly, those least likely to pray were adults with higher incomes and people who exercised on a daily basis. If you have enough money and are healthy enough to work out every day, it probably doesn't occur to you to pray for your well-being unless of course, you are a spiritual person or your faith in God plays an important role in your life. It appears, then, that those who are dealing with a difficult situation are more likely to use prayer as a way to seek help.
Prayer is considered by many people to be a form of alternative medicine. Studies suggest that prayer actually helps a person's perception of their physical and mental health and that it is an effective practice to manage stress. People turn to prayer as a supplement to traditional medical care.
Finding conclusive evidence that individual prayer or intercessory prayer (praying on another person's behalf) works is close to impossible. Studies that show improvement in health as a result of prayer are often criticized on scientific points. On the other hand, try convincing a person who makes a miraculous recovery that prayers weren't a key factor.
Prayer provides an opportunity to do something about a health concern, especially when doctors say they have done all they could do. It is an active expression to influence something that may be out of a person's control. When medical professionals recognize the connection between spirituality and health for their patients who pray, they have the opportunity to provide better treatment. For example, a doctor who acknowledges prayer as a source their patient's strength of will and positive attitude can validate his or her feelings and further reinforce the benefits of faith.
