Whitewater runs
Most rivers are served by multiple outfitters. Thus it’s easy for walk-ins to get on a raft trip in summer months. Outfitters set minimum ages and weights or both for children depending on the difficulty of the trip.Water levels are generally higher in late spring and early summer; lower in late summer and early fall. Check river levels on http://water.usgs.gov. Click on “current streamflows,” the state outline and then the river’s gauging station. Color-coded dots show whether the river level is normal, above normal or below normal.
Bring sunscreen, a bottle of water that can hook to a belt or personal flotation device with a caribiner, retainer strap for eyeglasses and a towel. Wear sneakers or river sandals but not flip-flops. Sneakers protect toes against inadvertent stubbings on rocks.
Don’t stand up in swift water if you fall out of a raft. Lie on your back, orient yourself downstream, feet first, with your toes out of the water. Use your arms to guide you to calm, shallow water. Drownings, however rare, are usually the result of foot entrapment. The foot gets caught in a rock crevice and the current pushes the swimmer face down into the water.
The rambunctious rapids that attract rafters to the seven whitewater rivers also draw multitudes of canoeists and kayakers, who test their paddling skills on wild water from the Chattooga to the Tuckasegee. But private canoeists and kayakers must provide their own boats — no rentals are available — and they should have appropriate whitewater experience, safety equipment and self-rescue ability. They also should paddle with a group or with at least two other boaters with knowledge of the river because of the inherent dangers of paddling on remote and turbulent water.
For those who want to learn how to paddle whitewater, the Nantahala Outdoor Center (www.noc.com) offers two-day or week-long canoeing and kayaking classes.
Rental canoes for downriver trips are available on two Western North Carolina river sections, the upper French Broad near Asheville and the New in Ashe and Alleghany counties, northeast of Boone. These rivers contain mostly mild, Class I rapids. For the French Broad, contact Asheville Outdoor Center (www.paddlewithus.com) and Headwaters Outfitters (www.headwatersoutfitters.com). For the New, contact New River Campground (www.canoeingthenew.com); New River Outfitters (www.canoethenew.com); Zaloo’s Canoes (www.zaloos.com).

DLM Solids Flow Meter
The deflection chute measuring system used in our DLM Solids Flow Meter is also based on reactive force but a curved guide chute is used in place of an impact plate. As a result, impact or shock is replaced by radial acceleration and chute deflection that a load cell detects. This signal is then electronically processed to produce flow rate and total weight values at accuracies generally better than +/- 2% and with repeatability of 0.5%.
Ideal for relatively high flow rates of free-flowing or pulverized materials. 30 to 600 tons per hour. Material temperatures from 0 to 500° F (260°C).Guided Chute Flow - Bookshelf
