Egypt's revolution nearer its start than end

The one next to my artist translator’s creation is different, simpler. Its two dominant images are a pair of arms, the rope that was shackling them together cut in two – and next to that, two pieces of a puzzle, one with a “2” and the other with a “5.” They could fit together, but they stand apart.
Egypt’s popular revolution began on Jan. 25, so forever it will be known as the January 25th Revolution, though the conclusion came 18 days later, when President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. Egypt likes to name things after dates in its recent history. The May 15th Bridge runs along and over July 26th Street. Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal on July 26, 1956, and the British mandate in the Mideast ended on May 15, 1948.
The Egypt that Mubarak left behind when he quit in disgrace on Feb. 11 is an overwhelming mess. He’s not to blame for all of it, but his 30-year dictatorship of graft and nepotism did little to overcome the enormous problems this country faces. It arguably made them worse.
A colleague here explained much of it in an article about housing. On the outskirts of Cairo are gated communities with mansions that would do Hollywood proud. In the city are slums where families live in hovels around a courtyard with a single toilet. Imagine waiting in line for the bathroom every morning with 70 other people. That is their reality.
Some of those 70 people are employed. Some might sweep office buildings for $500 a month. They’re the lucky ones. Some might work in factories for $200 a month. They’re the lucky ones. Some could have civil service jobs that pay $100 a month, plus bribes, of course.
They’re also lucky.
In the countryside are villages built around factories. A colleague visited one, and found that men work seven days a week, make $70 a month, grow some vegetables in their yards and try to subsist.
Yet they, too, are Egypt’s lucky ones.
Next to the Nile River is a Cairo neighborhood called Imbaba. An open-air marketplace winds north through the neighborhood, not far from the river. The farther you get into the neighborhood, the worse it looks. Crumbling buildings. Rubble. Trash.
