Job seekers get potential leads at Guinta-sponsored fair in Rochester
ROCHESTER — Area job seekers converged on Brady Sullivan Technical Park in Rochester on Monday for a special job fair to meet with prospective employers, as well as to have their voices heard by their representative in Congress.
The event, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is part of Congressman Frank Guinta's "Getting Granite Staters Back to Work" initiative in which the former Manchester mayor hopes to facilitate employment and promote small businesses.
During the event, job seekers had an opportunity to meet with about 30 different employers and job facilitators, first by visiting tables set up with information and manned with representatives from the individual organizations, then later with one on one interviews. Organizations at the event included Combined Insurance, AAA of Northern New England, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Manchester Police Department.
Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration's New Hampshire District Office were on hand at the event to aid people interested in starting their own business. Rachael M. Roderick, business development specialist for the SBA, said that she has noticed an interest in the path of self-employment among job seekers.
"A lot of people are interested in it," Roderick said.
Roderick said that at the SBA's table, prospective entrepreneurs could find information on how to register their business' name and how to file taxes as a business owner, as well as information on resources such as a loan program for financing.
The University of New Hampshire's Advising and Career Center were also represented at the event in order to provide job search advice and resume pointers.
Guinta himself attended the event, with the hope of meeting with unemployed workers and taking their experiences back with him to Washington.
"My goal is to utilize the office in a positive way," said Guinta.
Guinta added the initiative is a non-partisan effort to help people find work, which in turn will help the area's economy.
"This is simply about 'I'm your representative and I'm here to help you,'" said Guinta.
According to Guinta, a similar event held in Derry on June 20 was very successful, and that the community is appreciative of it. From what he saw Monday morning, he expected the Rochester fair to be just as successful.
"In the first 15 minutes we had 35 people walk through the door," said Guinta.
