CHAIR SHOTS: WWE 'suspends' CM Punk after epic promo on Raw
Following one of the best promos the wrestling business has ever heard, WWE announced on its website CM Punk was suspended by Vince McMahon himself, effectively ending his career with World Wrestling Entertainment.
Punk's promo to close the show has drawn rave reviews from some of the biggest names in professional wrestling via Twitter. In it, he professed himself the best wrestler (emphasis on wrestler ) in the world and said the only reason John Cena is thought of to be the best is because he sucks up to McMahon (Punk used stronger words). He then accused McMahon of not knowing how to run is own company, and said he wondered if it would just get better if the Chairman died, before ripping Stephanie and Triple H, the heirs to the WWE throne. He started to criticize the B.A. Star anti-bullying campaign before his mic went dead and the show was cut off the air.

Of course, this is all just part of the storyline. There's no way McMahon let Punk rant that long before cutting his microphone. And it's notable that when Punk talked about where he might go after leaving WWE, he mentioned New Japan and Ring of Honor, but not TNA. He certainly ripped Hulk Hogan to shreds though.
The subtle touch of wearing a shirt of Stone Cold Steve Austin, the greatest anti-authority figure in WWE history, shouldn't go unnoticed either. If Punk were really shooting, he probably would've worn something WWE didn't produce.
Punk's promo was so good because it treaded the fine line between the scripted part of pro wrestling and the business side of it. He played to the internet fans and "smart marks" by airing the same grievences many of them do, yet he shoved it in their faces when they cheered him on, noting they still support the WWE product, whether he's there are not. And he's right. The biggest complainers are the most loyal fans.
How the angle plays out from here remains to be seen, but this promo just upped the ante big time. There's little doubt in my mind that Punk's suspension will be lifted before Money in the Bank, although I'd keep him off TV until the PPV now. After that promo, any attempt at a follow-up would likely fall flat, or get him an incredible amount of cheers, which WWE doesn't want for the purposes of the storyline.
Next week's Raw has already been taped, so if he's there, cheers can be edited out. But the following week is in Boston, Cena's hometown, ironically before the PPV in Punk's hometown of Chicago. (Don't think for a second that wasn't planned.) There would be no masking cheers in Boston, and that would be embarrassing for Cena and WWE. In Chicago, at least it can be covered by Punk being the hometown boy. ...
