The polarizer is a filter that has many applications in landscape photography, where by rotating the front half of the filter to an ideal position (determined visually, by experimentation) you can reduce reflections on some objects, such as water and glass. Polarizers also have the noticeable effect of darkening a blue sky, though they won't do anything on overcast skies. My most common use of a polarizer is to remove the reflections of an overcast sky from leaves when shooting in a forest; this reveals more of the true color of the leaves, increasing the apparent "saturation" of the colors. Other filters that you might want eventually, but shouldn't worry about now, are neutral density and split neutral density filters. ND filters block all colors evenly, simply making the scene darker; they're useful for taking long exposures during the day, for example to blur waterfalls (under overcast light beneath a canopy of trees, shutter speeds are usually slow enough anyway, and since a polarizer cuts some light by itself already, I've never personally needed an ND filter). Split ND filters are darker on one half than they are on the other, and can be used for example to darken the sky of a sunset, so the sky and ground are not so far apart in lightness that the camera can't capture both of them at the same time. Of course, you could also put the camera on a tripod and, using the manual settings mode, shoot two images, one with a nicely exposed sky and another with a nicely exposed ground, and blend them in Photoshop or some other image editor.
