For weeks, Republicans in Congress have set the agenda in the debate over raising the ceiling of the debt and deficit reduction. Well, today, Obama made his case to the American people in a news conference at the White House. He chastised the Republican lawmakers to lecture Democrats on austerity, while supporting tax breaks for oil companies and owners of business jets.
We'll hear the reaction of some of the Republicans in a moment. First, here's NPR's Scott Horsley with more on the president's message today.
Scott Horsley: Obama says he has already shown a willingness to make tough spending cuts. Now, he argues, is the Republicans' turn to give ground and raise taxes. He highlighted some of the targets for unpopular tax increases, including oil companies, hedge fund owners and those traveling in business jets.
President BARACK OBAMA: If everyone is ready to take on their sacred cows and do difficult things in order to achieve the goal of reducing the actual deficit, so I think it would be hard for Republicans to stand there and that tax breaks for business jets is large enough that we are not willing to come to the table and get a fait accompli.
Horsley: Adding urgency to this dispute is the need to raise the federal debt ceiling by August 2nd or the risk of bankruptcy administration. The yellow light flashes, Obama said. He does not want the light turns red.
President Obama: It's about jobs. This is not an abstraction. If the government of the United States, for the first time, can not pay its bills if it fails, then the consequences for the U.S. economy will be.
Horsley: Lawmakers say they want to see significant progress on deficit reduction, before they will vote to raise the debt ceiling. Obama supports one of the best ways to reduce the deficit by boosting the economy. He encouraged the legislature to take action now to stimulate economic growth, even if these steps worsen the deficit in the short term.
Obama: I think it makes perfect sense for us to take a look at, can we expand the payroll tax, for example, an additional year.

Former San Mateo County sheriff and current Supervisor Don Horsley on Tuesday questioned the wisdom of choosing a company with no prior jail-building experience to oversee planning and construction of a new correctional facility.
President Obama took questions from reporters Wednesday at his first news conference since March. He called out congressional Republicans for their refusal to consider any revenue increases as part of a budget deal.

Battleground Blog » Oddball of the Week: Neal Horsley
This week’s Oddball comes from Georgia, a man named Neal Horsley who is running for Governor as the candidate of something he calls the ”Creator’s Rights Party” — an entity he’s created.
Horsley created The Nuremberg Files, a well-known website that displays the names and locations of various doctors who perform abortions throughout the United States. The site came under heavy fire providing photos, addresses, and other personal data of abortion providers.
Horsley believes the United States needs to be broken up. Recently, he was asked if he was ready to sacrifice his own son for the cause of succession. Not only does Horsley say yes, he goes on to recount a past fight with his son where he almost killed him.
“I was one foot from killing my own son, or hurting him really, really bad,” Horsley told Dylan Krider of the Underground Examiner. “If he would have attacked me again, I would have stuck him. Or cut him or sliced him or done something to stop him. That’s the point, your hypothetical has literally already been worked out with me, and that’s what makes me different from the other candidates for Governor. They understand I’m not like no politician they have looked at, ever. I am prepared to do a John Brown. I’m not prepared to do an Abe Lincoln and talk out both sides of my mouth and try to get a majority together. I’m looking for the people who are prepared to go with me and take over the foundry, then set up shop and prepare to fight to the death. I’ll do it.”
A few years ago, Horsley made national news when, in an interview with Alan Colmes, he admitted to having sex with farm animals when he was younger.
COLMES: “I’m not so sure that that is so.”
HORSLEY: “You didn’t grow up on a farm in Georgia, did you?”
COLMES: “Are you suggesting that everybody who grows up on a farm in Georgia has a mule as a girlfriend?”
HORSLEY: It has historically been the case. You people are so far removed from the reality…Welcome to domestic life on the farm…If it’s warm and it’s damp and it vibrates, you might in fact have sex with it.”
For a guy who’s enjoyed sex with farm animals, Horsley is very clear on the issue of homosexual rights. In a 2009 press release he states that if elected he will “protect homofagots from citizen violence and will provide them with due process of law instead of killing them in droves as in done in Iraq.
